“Like lots of great things in life, I didn't really have a plan...
I began setting myself up as self-employed soon after leaving art school whilst working from my attic bedroom in Bradford, west Yorkshire. From there, I went on to produce lengths of mono-printed and hand-painted silks which I sold to fashion designers to make their bespoke one-off collections. It was a natural progression leading onto the creation of my own label and making my own collection. Initially I created accessories and fabrics for weddings - bright men’s ties, waistcoats, scarves etc. (all very on trend in the 80's!). I joined forces with three art school friends and we opened our own Designer/gift shop which ran for 7 years. During this time my designs were all one-off hand crafted pieces, that were sold through exclusive shops and galleries as well as our own outlet.
When I set up and moved to Bristol in 2001, I was still producing silks and velvets but started introducing different bought-in fabrics. I felt inspired to work with combinations of different textiles and make a collection that was more accessible, a day to day range that was practical and affordable and well designed. I started experimenting with the construction of fabrics which lead on to the “Pleated Collection…..
And from then, #Wristees® were born!”.
